How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 18–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary at a sit-down restaurant. 15% is the low end; 20%+ rewards great service.

How do you calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage. For a 20% tip on $50, that's $50 × 0.20 = $10, for a $60 total. To split, divide the total by the number of people.

Do you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is standard and perfectly polite. Tipping on the post-tax total is a little more generous.
